Microsoft Office SharePoint Server offers various ways of customization of the information living in SharePoint. Employees can have a personal site called My Sites for a blog, pictures, personal documents, and shared documents. Other templates can also be introduced for project management, asset tracking, and much more. My Sites are a great way for employees to share from a more personal level rather than just posting on a Team Site.
Another way to customize a SharePoint experience is to use Audience Targeting. By using other aspects of your business like information located in Active Directory like locations, managers, divisions, specific content can be placed on a portal that is associated with that user. This adds dynamic information in real time when it is possibly needed and creates a short cut to finding the information.
Search capabilities can also be custom. Administrators can add “best bet” keywords in search results and other areas of content can be added to the search index. For example if you would like content from your web site to be available in search results, you can do that with SharePoint. All searches are validated with your security and only the results you should see are allowed, which makes a great safety net for security reasons.
The main area of customization is the portal features. Portals can be branded to fit your company. Match colors, logo, fonts, everything by designing the master page for your portal. The templates can also be designed to show the information how you want it shown. Created custom lists for data entry for customer records, help desk requests, etc. Lists also carry the ability to work in Data-sheet View which is just like working in Microsoft Excel. Users can also import the data from an Excel spreadsheet to create a custom list.
